Social media has been flooded with a video allegedly showing a group of youths and children wielding swords and waving Islamic flags as they march through a street, with claims linking it to the recent communal violence that erupted in Haryana's Nuh district on July 31, resulting in the deaths of at least six people.
To verify the authenticity of the video, a fact check was conducted, including a reverse image search of keyframes from the video. This led to a tweet and a Reddit post where users in the comment sections pointed out that the video was actually from a Muharram procession in West Bengal.
Further investigations led to a clearer version of the video, dated July 29, 2023, posted by a social worker named Shaikh Aptaj Bharatiya from Dhuliyan, West Bengal. He confirmed that the video depicted a Muharram procession in Dhuliyan, which took place on the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura.
Additionally, a Google Earth search of CJ Patel More Road in Dhuliyan, dated May 2023, was compared with the video's content, and it was verified that the viral video was indeed from Dhuliyan, West Bengal.
Despite the false claims circulating on social media, there is no connection between the Muharram procession in West Bengal and the communal violence that occurred in Haryana's Nuh district. The misleading information has caused confusion and spread false narratives.
