Kozhikode: In the wake of the Nipah virus outbreak, Friday prayers were called off in the district to cooperate with the government authorities' efforts to control the spread of the disease.

"In the wake of the outbreak of Nipah virus in our area, the district collector and police authorities have directed us to not gather people in the mosque. Complying with the orders we have decided to close the mosque until further orders. Friday prayers will not be held today. We will cooperate with the government authorities to control this disease," said Zubair P, Secretary of Kuttiady Juma Masjid Mahallu Committee.

Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha had declared holiday on Thursday and Friday for all educational institutions in the district, reports India Today. On a Facebook post, she also directed all educational institutions in Kozhikode to arrange for online classes for the students on both the days.

On Friday, a 39-year-old man tested positive for a Nipah attack, his being the sixth confirmed Nipah case in Kerala. The fifth confirmed case in the state had been reported on Wednesday. Active cases in Kerala stand at four, as two people who had tested positive died.

Bidar: In Chalakapur village of Bhalki taluk, Dalits were allegedly attacked by upper-caste individuals during a Hanuman festival procession, leading to a major incident.

The attack occurred on November 1 after a verbal dispute broke out between Dalits and upper-caste individuals during the procession. Dalit young men have accused upper-caste men of entering their homes and assaulting them. Several Dalit young men were injured in the incident.

A complaint has been lodged at the Katak Chincholi police station, and a case has been registered against more than 70 people.
