Goa court allows plea for mental health check-up of start-up CEO Seth held for killing her son
Panaji, Mar 4: A Goa court on Monday allowed an application by the father of Suchana Seth, CEO of an Artificial Intelligence start-up who is accused of killing her four-year-old son while on a visit here, to get his daughter's mental health condition examined by a board of doctors.
Seth's father had moved the application before the children's court to have her mental condition examined by a board of doctors under the Mental Healthcare Act. During hearing, the police had opposed the plea, saying she did not show signs of mental illness during assessments of her mental health condition while in custody.
The lawyer representing her father, who argued the case before the court, said that after Monday's development, the police will have to produce Seth (39), whose start-up is based in adjoining Karnataka, before a medical board for a fresh examination of her mental condition.
"The operative part of the order is that she will have to be referred to a board under the Mental Health Act for further assessment," the lawyer said.
The Goa police, investigating the case, had earlier opposed the plea, informing the court that after arrest in January, Seth has been subjected to regular health check-ups, including assessments of her mental health condition, during her period in custody.
"She gave clear and rational answers in her assessments. She did not report any active death wishes or suicidal tendencies. Her judgement is intact and no psychotic or pervasive mood symptoms were elicited in her responses," the police had told the court earlier.
The AI start-up CEO, locked in a divorce dispute with her husband, is accused of killing her son in a Candolim-based service apartment while on a visit to the coastal state.
She was arrested on January 8 from Chitradurga district in Karnataka while she was travelling in a taxi with her son's body stuffed in a bag.

Bengaluru police arrest 6 from TN's Coimbatore in dacoity case
Bengaluru (PTI): Six persons were arrested from Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district in connection with a dacoity case here, police said on Sunday.
The police seized two two-wheelers, four mobile phones, and two laptops worth Rs 3 lakh from the accused.
The accused allegedly trespassed into a house here and threatened the occupants with deadly weapons, earlier this month.
According to police, the complainant, a resident of Pavamana Nagar within the limits of Konanakunte Police Station, submitted a complaint on April 18. He was a college student, originally from Kerala. He, along with six other students, resided in the house and all were pursuing studies at the same college.
On the night of April 17, around late hours, six unknown persons aged between 20-25 years unlawfully entered the house. They assaulted the occupants with their hands and a knife, causing bleeding injuries, threatened them, and robbed them of Rs 10,000 cash, four mobile phones, two laptops, and a two-wheeler, they said, adding that based on the complaint, a dacoity case was registered.
During the investigation, the police conducted inquiries from various angles and gathered credible information through informants. the an official release said, adding, the accused were later picked up from Coimbatore.
The police recovered the stolen laptops, mobile phones, a two-wheeler belonging to the complainant, and another one used in the commission of the offence, they said.
"Upon interrogation, all six accused confessed to their involvement in the offence."
The six accused were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody, they added.
