Ahmedabad: The discovery of supposedly 'destroyed' liquor bottles in Surat jail has resulted in an inquiry being ordered by the Gujarat High Court. Found hidden in a sub-jail, these bottles, originally marked for destruction after a court order in August 2021, have raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the state's prohibition policy.

During a raid last October, Kamrej police uncovered 3,221 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) in the sub-jail. Shockingly, 1,678 of these bottles matched those documented as destroyed under a previous court-ordered process. This discrepancy led to the booking of three constables under charges related to the Prohibition Act, criminal conspiracy, and concealing the liquor stash in the sub-jail.

Justice H D Suthar of the Gujarat High Court expressed strong displeasure, questioning the rationale behind Gujarat's dry state policy when such incidents involving law enforcement officials occur. He ordered a thorough inquiry by the state police's monitoring cell into the alleged destruction process and the circumstances under which the liquor resurfaced in the jail. The court has stayed further action against the accused constables pending the next hearing scheduled for August 8.

Dhanbad (Jharkhand) (PTI): At least four workers died after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Saturday, a police official said.

The incident took place at Moonidih coal washery in the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).

"Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation," Putki police station in-charge Waqar Hussain told PTI.

The incident took place when coal slurry was being loaded into trucks by workers, during which a large chunk of slurry fell and trapped several workers underneath, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri, Dinesh Bauri, Deepak Bauri, and Hemlal Gope.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased and local villagers placed the bodies in front of the washery gate and began a protest.

They demanded compensation, jobs for dependents and action against those responsible for the incident.

Police and administration officials are trying to pacify the protesters, an official said.
