Hyderabad: Hindutva activists staged a protest outside the nearly 400-year-old Masjid-e-Hussaini in Balapur, Hyderabad, on Wednesday, demanding the closure of Madarsa Noomania, which operates inside the mosque premises.

The dharna, led by BJP leader Ramkrishna Reddy, took place near the mosque in Sultanapur under the jurisdiction of Balapur Police Station. Protesters raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram,” clapped hands, and accused the madrasa of being “illegally run” for the past seven years.

Speaking to reporters, Ramkrishna Reddy alleged that “Rohingyas who do not belong to the region are living in the madrasa” and claimed that “local Hindus are facing severe difficulties.”

Protesters dispersed after ACP Janakiram Reddy reached the spot and assured them that action would be taken against the madrasa. However, no FIR has been filed and no arrests were made.

Madarsa in-charge Akbar Khan dismissed the claims, stating that “all students are from Telangana” and that the BJP is “falsely alleging the madrasa is illegal.” He added that this issue has persisted for the past six months.

Local resident Mohammed Riyas said the incident seemed to be a “deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony” in the area. Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesperson of Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT), met the Balapur Police Inspector demanding action against the BJP leaders who led the protest. Calling the act one of “Hindutva communal elements,” he accused the police of being “mute spectators” and questioned why no action was taken against those raising anti-Muslim slogans.

Shillong (PTI): An interstate racket involved in ATM thefts across several states has been busted, with the arrest of six persons in connection with a break-in at an electronic banking outlet in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused were allegedly involved in breaking into an ATM of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank on April 5, 2024, they said.

Three of the accused were arrested from Barpeta in Assam, while the remaining were apprehended from Haryana, police said.

Ri-Bhoi SP Giri Prasad M said a special police team was constituted to investigate the case.

"With coordinated efforts and assistance from Assam and Haryana Police, we were able to apprehend the accused involved in the ATM break-in," he told PTI.

The case was registered at Umiam police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to police, the gang used gas cutters to break open the ATM safe and fled with the cash within minutes.

"The group is part of a larger network involved in similar ATM thefts across different states. Further investigation is underway to dismantle the entire network," the SP added.
