Hyderabad: A man identified as Krishnaiah Goud has been arrested by the Begum Bazaar police for allegedly damaging a Durga idol at Numaish Grounds on Thursday night. The accused, who hails from Nagarkurnool district, is reported to be mentally disturbed.

According to DCP Central Akshansh Yadav, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. at the pandal where the accused damaged the idol. Krishnaiah, who is a vagabond living on the footpaths, was arrested at 8:15 p.m. in the Feelkhana area. Two cases have been registered, one against the accused and another against the organisers for failing to implement proper security measures.

The DCP confirmed that there is no communal angle to the incident and urged organisers to ensure adequate security during religious events. The incident took place while a Dandiya program was ongoing at the exhibition grounds.

In light of the incident, Alt News co founder and fact checker Mohammed Zubair responded to a post on X by @MrSinha_, who characterised the vandalism as a reflection of the state of Hyderabad under Congress rule. Zubair stated, "There won't be any legal action against accounts like @MrSinha_ who regularly try to communalize such unfortunate incidents. The person who 'destroyed' the idol is Krishnaiah Goud. While searching for food, he disturbed the idol, which got damaged."
