Bengaluru: The Union health ministry on Monday confirmed that two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases have been detected in Karnataka.

These cases were identified through the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) routine surveillance for various respiratory viruses, aligning with their ongoing efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses nationwide.

An 8-month-old male infant, who tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru with bronchopneumonia, is now recovering.

A 3-month-old female infant, diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru for bronchopneumonia, has since been discharged.

The ministry mentioned that neither of the affected patients have any history of international travel.

"ICMR will continue to track trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already providing timely updates regarding the situation in China to further inform ongoing measures," it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka state health department has maintained that there is no cause for concern.
