New Delhi: In the recently released data of the ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey by India Today magazine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity has taken a hit as the first choice for the next prime minister of India. Modi, who until August 2020 enjoyed 66% popularity in the survey, is seen a downfall in the numbers to 24%.
The decline in the popularity has been constant as after August 2020, the data of survey was again released in January 2021 wherein Modi had 38% popularity to come back as the PM of the country.
Amidst the reported fallout within the party between the Modi lobby and UP CM Yogi Adityanath lobby, the latter has gained popularity among the Indians to be the second-best choice for the next PM of the country. Adityanath who was the first choice PM for 3% of people in August last year saw an increase to 10% in January this year and has 11% popularity in the latest data released by India Today.
Rahul Gandhi has also seen a rise in his number from 8% last year to 10% in the latest data. In January 2021, Rahul had seen a 1% fall in his numbers to 7% from 8% in August 2020.
One of the major reasons as seen by many for the decline of Modi’s popularity is the second wave of COVID-19 and the way the Indian government led by PM Modi handled the situation. It also has to do with some of the crucial economic reforms and policies that the government brought in.
Among other candidates, Arvind Kejriwal and Mamta Bannerjee fill the two slots of the top five candidates to be the next PM of India. Kejriwal who had 3% of people who would choose him as the next PM of the country in August last year, now has 8% popularity. Mamata Banerjee on the other hand had 2% numbers behind her last year and is now neck to neck with Delhi CM Kejriwal with 8% popularity.
Besides Modi, Amit Shah is the only one on the list of eight candidates to have lost popularity in the latest data. Amit Shah had 4% popularity in August last year and 8% in January 2021 which has now declined to 7% in August 2021.
Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are the other candidates in the list with both having 4% popularity in the contest. While Sonia neither gained nor lost any popularity from January 2021, Priyanka Gandhi gained 1% to be at 4% popularity from 3% in January this year.
