New Delhi: In a recent turn of events, Indian media outlets are under scrutiny for their inaccurate and sensational reporting on a CNN story titled "Exclusive: US prepared ‘rigorously’ for potential Russian nuclear strike in Ukraine in late 2022, officials say," authored by Jim Sciutto, CNN's National Security Analyst.

Contrary to the sensational headlines that flooded Indian media, the CNN report did not attribute the prevention of a potential nuclear attack on Ukraine solely to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The misrepresentation of facts by several Indian news outlets has sparked criticism for glorifying Modi without adhering to the nuanced details presented in Jim Sciutto's article.

The CNN report highlighted the Biden administration's preparations for the possibility of a Russian nuclear strike in late 2022. It specifically emphasized concerns about Russia using tactical or battlefield nuclear weapons.

"The Biden administration was specifically concerned Russia might use a tactical or battlefield nuclear weapon, the officials said," Jim stated in the report.

The report also revealed the U.S. administration's efforts to enlist the help of non-allies, including China and India, to discourage Russia from such an attack.

Despite this, Indian media outlets ran misleading headlines such as "PM Modi's outreach to Putin helped prevent 'potential nuclear attack' on Ukraine in late 2022: CNN Report" (India Today), "PM Modi helped prevent ‘potential nuclear attack’ in Ukraine: Report" (Hindustan Times), and "India's intervention made Putin abandon use of nuclear weapon in Ukraine: Report" (WION).

The critical aspect that the Indian media failed to acknowledge was the collaborative efforts of multiple nations and leaders in averting a crisis. The CNN article clearly stated that outreach and public statements from Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were part of a broader strategy to show international concern, not a singular decisive action by any one leader.

Furthermore, the report highlighted the uncertainty faced by U.S. officials regarding their ability to detect Russia moving tactical nuclear weapons into place. Unlike strategic nuclear weapons, tactical weapons are small enough to be moved quietly and fired from conventional systems already deployed to the battlefield.

'However, US officials were not certain they would know if Russia was moving tactical nuclear weapons into place. Unlike strategic nuclear weapons, capable of destroying entire cities, tactical or battlefield nuclear weapons are small enough to be moved quietly and could be fired from conventional systems already deployed to the Ukrainian battlefield," the report added.

The urgency of the situation prompted multiple senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley, to engage in direct communication with their Russian counterparts. President Joe Biden sent CIA Director Bill Burns to speak with Sergey Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service.

"Multiple senior administration officials took part in an urgent outreach. Secretary of State Antony Blinken communicated US concerns “very directly” with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, according to senior administration officials. Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley called his Russian counterpart, General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces. According to a senior US official, President Joe Biden sent CIA Director Bill Burns to speak to Sergey Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, in Turkey to communicate US concerns about a nuclear strike taking place and gauge Russian intentions," the report further added.

In addition to these diplomatic efforts, the U.S. collaborated with its allies to develop contingency plans for a potential Russian nuclear attack and communicated warnings to Russia about the severe consequences such an action would entail, it stated.

In light of these critical details, it is evident that the Indian media's portrayal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the sole savior in preventing a nuclear war lacks accuracy and nuance. This misinterpretation and sensationalism has once again raised questions about responsible journalism and the need for accurate reporting by Indian media in sensitive matters.
