New Delhi: Indian women live, on average, four years longer than men, with life expectancy in the country now standing at 70.3 years, a gain of over 20 years from fifty years ago, according to the latest official data.
The new Sample Registration Survey (SRS) report, cited by Deccan Herald on Sunday, highlights that Kerala has the highest life expectancy at 75.1 years. Southern states, in general, fare better than their northern counterparts. Among the southern states, Karnataka has the lowest life expectancy at 70 years, followed by Andhra Pradesh (70.7), Telangana (70.8), and Tamil Nadu (73.4).
According to the report, males live for 68.5 years on an average, while females live for 72.5 years. It further shows that, in the 2019-23 period, females consistently outlive males in all states and Union Territories, both in rural and urban areas.
“On an average, female life expectancy at birth is more than male life expectancy at birth by almost four years. Even at age 70 years, this difference is favourable towards females by more than one year,” the report states.
At the state level, males in Jammu and Kashmir have the highest life expectancy at 73.4 years, while females in Kerala have the highest at 78.4 years. On the other end of the spectrum, Chhattisgarh has the lowest life expectancy for both genders — 62.4 years for men and 67.1 years for women.
Meanwhile, a second SRS report reveals that non-communicable diseases account for nearly 57% of deaths in India. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause, contributing to 31% of all deaths, while respiratory infections (9.3%) and cancers (6.4%) follow in second and third place.
