NEW DELHI: Indian Naval officer Abhilash Tomy, who was injured while participating in the round-the-world solo race, was rescued on Monday. The 39-year-old Navy commander had lost its mast in a storm on Friday.

Here are the top developments so far:

* Tomy is in a conscious state and has been shifted to the French Fishing Vessel Osiris. Some civilian and naval aircraft were also mobilised to rescue him.

* A Defence spokesman had earlier said bad weather was creating impediments in reaching Tomy whose vessel was "rolling excessively" in the South Indian Ocean. The vessel was located by an Indian Navy aircraft on Sunday.

* The rescue was treacherous as Tomy had suffered a back injury on Friday after his yacht was hit by a vicious storm with 14- metre-high waves mid-way in the southern Indian Ocean.

* Earlier, the Race organisers said Tomy had sent a message saying "ACTIVATED EPIRB. CAN'T WALK. MIGHT NEED STRETCHER". A subsequent message read "CAN MOVE TOES. FEEL NUMB. CAN'T EAT OR DRINK. TOUGH 2 REACH GRAB BAG".

* The French ship and a P-8A Poseidon from the Adelaide-based Surveillance and Response Group (from the) Royal Australian Air Force, which has been deployed to La Reunion Island, France, assisted in the search.

* The Golden Globe Race involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe in yachts similar to those used in the first race 50 years ago, with no modern technology allowed except the communications equipment.

* Tomy's own yacht is a replica of Robin Knox-Johnston's Suhail, winner of the first Golden Globe Race.(With agency inputs)
