Jamia Millia Student leaders and Anti-CAA activists Aysha Renna and Ladeeda Farzana on Tuesday sent legal notices to OpIndia, the right-wing news portal for falsely reporting that they had participated in the Delhi Violence in February this year and that they have terrorism links.

The student leaders have also demanded a compensation of Rs. 50 lakh and an unconditional apology from the website.

“In the wake of continuously spreading hatred and fake news about me, I have sent a legal notice against OpIndia with my demands. This hate emitting machine should be brought before the law is the need of the hour,” Renna who is a student of MA History at Jamia Millia Islamia said.

Ladeeda Farzana said that it’s been quite long since an RSS machinery OpIndia have been spearheading hate campaigns against her.

“And now it’s time for a legal retaliation against these forces of fascism,” she said. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic.

According to the notices, OpIndia has tried to build and propagate a fabricated narrative against student leaders that they are anti-nationals, extremists, and terrorists.

OpIndia is known for its proximity to the Sangh Parivar.  The Hindu nationalist website has published fake news and anti-Muslim commentary on multiple occasions.

The notices included excerpts from news reports that the OpIndia was accused of publishing against Renna and Farzana.

The student leaders also said their social media posts and public speeches are being manipulated by misinterpreting out of its context and deducting false inferences from the same.

“Hence, you are liable to be punished as per Section 499 and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. Your deeds and words imputed a defamatory statement against my client (Ladeeda Farzana), which is intended to harm and lower the reputation of my client (Ladeeda Farzana) and consequently defame my client (Ladeeda Farzana). Even though the loss and hardship cannot be quantified in terms of money, my client (Ladeeda Farzana) estimates the same at Rs.50,00,000 (Rupees Fifty Lakhs Only). You and your properties are liable for the said claim and you are directed to pay the said amount within 7 days from the receipt of this notice and also tender an unconditional apology to my client (Ladeeda Farzana) and withdraw the Facebook post unconditionally,” the legal notice read.
