Mysuru: The highly anticipated moment of the 23rd Mayoral election has come to an end at the Mysuru City Corporation with the selection of JDS member Rukmini Madegowda, a contender from the 36th ward, who became the Mayor on Wednesday. The Congress Member from the 10th ward, Anwar Baig (Aftab) has been chosen as the Deputy Mayor of the MCC.

Previously, the alliance between Congress and JDs had continued with a JDS contender occupying the Mayoral seat, while Congress occupied the position of the Deputy Mayor for two consecutive terms. However, the alliance between Congress and JDS came to an end in this term.

Despite the broken alliance this term, with the support from Congress, the JDS contender, Rukmini Madegowda was able to secure the Mayoral seat and likewise, with the JDS support, the Congress contender, Anwar Baig (Aftab) acquired the post of the Deputy Mayor.

Under the leadership of the Regional Commissioner Prakash, the Mayoral election was conducted by the Corporation Commissioner Shilpanag at the MCC premises on Wednesday. As the election process was about to begin, BJP’s Sunanda Palanetri submitted her letter of nomination. The Congress party, Shantakumari, and Rukmini Madegowda from the JDS party also submitted their letters of nominations.

It is learned that, among the 73 members at the MCC, JDS’s Rukmini Madegowda secured 43 votes, while the BJP’s Sunanda Palanetri secured 26 votes and Congress’s Shantakumari did not receive any votes.

For the position of the Deputy Mayor, there was a competition between Congress’s Anwar Baig and BJP’s Satvik. But in the end, Congress contender, Anwar Baig won the position and became the Deputy Mayor after securing a total of 44 votes, while Satvik secured 26 votes in the election.

Bengaluru, May 3: Citing the ongoing heatwave in the state, Karnataka BJP on Friday petitioned the Election Commission with a request to modify the polling hours to the 6am-7pm period in the 14 parliamentary constituencies in the state that goes to polls on May 7.

Polling is currently scheduled to be held in the second phase in the state in 14 segments in the northern districts between 7am to 6pm on May 7.

"It has become hard to come out and vote between hours 10.00 to 17.00 due to uncontrollable heat. The average heat in those parts (north Karnataka) covering 14 parliamentary constituencies are between 37 and 42 degree (Celsius). The mercury is rising at an alarming level and it would become hard for the electors to come out and vote," BJP's petition said.

The petition highlighted the alarming rise in temperatures, which are expected to go beyond 40 degree Celsius, and also stated that the number of voters over the age of 40 is high and that they are vulnerable to the heatwave.

"To keep up the good spirit of voting, necessary action should be taken," the BJP petition urged the Election Commission, saying, "In this background, it is requested to modify the time of voting in the 14 parliamentary constituencies from 06.00 to 19.00 hours on May 7".

Polling was held between 7 am and 6 pm during Karnataka's first phase of the Lok Sabha polls in 14 constituencies on April 26.
