New Delhi/Kolkata: Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested Jadavpur University (JU) alumnus Hindol Majumdar at Indira Gandhi International Airport, shortly after his arrival from Spain, in connection with the March attack on West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu’s convoy.

Majumdar, a research scholar pursuing higher studies in Spain, was named in the FIR as the “prime conspirator” behind the incident. A Look Out Circular (LOC) had been issued against him earlier.

“He was arrested this morning at Delhi airport on the basis of the LOC. A team from Jadavpur police station has reached Delhi to complete the arrest process. He will be produced in court on Thursday for transit remand,” a senior Kolkata Police officer said.

The FIR, registered on March 1 at Jadavpur police station, invoked provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt), 324(2) (mischief), Sections 3/4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, and Section 9 of the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (WBMPO) Act.

The case relates to violent protests on March 1, when Basu visited JU for a meeting of the West Bengal College and University Professors’ Association. Demonstrators, including members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and other Left student outfits, demanded the holding of student union elections.

As Basu attempted to leave, around 100 students allegedly surrounded his car, damaged its windscreen, displayed shoes, and deflated the tyres, confining him inside for nearly two hours. The minister suffered minor injuries from shattered glass, while one student was reportedly hurt by a vehicle in the convoy.

Multiple FIRs were filed in connection with the violence, with both police and students lodging complaints. The Calcutta High Court had directed the police to register FIRs on the basis of student complaints as well.
