Bengaluru: Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa, after heeding objections raised by several legislators, told the Legislative Council that his department would withdraw the circular that threatened teachers with the loss of salary grants if students secured less than 60% in their subjects.
The directive, issued in the wake of a dip in the 2025 SSLC pass percentage, sought to hold teachers accountable for student performance. However, the move drew sharp criticism from several legislators, who argued that the 60% benchmark was arbitrary and unfair, as reported by Deccan Herald on Tuesday.
BJP MLC S.V. Sankanur said teachers could not be blamed for poor results when students were being promoted up to Class 9 without adequate academic rigour. “If you simply promote students till Class 9 and expect them to perform well in SSLC examinations, how is that possible? Teachers cannot be held for poor performance,” DH quoted him as saying.
Madhu Bangarappa assured the House that he had already discussed the matter with officials and confirmed the withdrawal of the circular. His statement comes shortly after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged action against Deputy Directors of Public Instruction for low SSLC performance in their respective districts.
