Srinagar, May 5: An assistant professor from the Kashmir University has been reported missing leading to protests by the students, police said on Saturday.
The family of Muhammad Rafi Bhat from the Sociology department told University authorities that he had been missing since Friday.
The varsity's Vice Chancellor met the protesting students and Bhat's family members to inform them that Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Director General of Police (DGP) and the university the Chancellor were notified of the incident.
Classes and all other academic activities were suspended in the University.
Bhat belongs to Chunduna village of Ganderbal district.
He has a doctorate in sociology in addition to having passed the UGC's prestigious Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) competition which entitles one to directly pursue doctoral research without passing the M.Phil degree.

Mangaluru: Renowned educationist and businessman Dr. CA. Adige Raghavendra Rao (88), founder of the Srinivas Group of Institutions, passed away on Tuesday night.
Dr. Rao founded the A. Sham Rao Foundation in 1988 and played a key role in developing the Srinivas Group of Colleges into one of the prominent educational institutions in the state.
Srinivas College of Hotel Management, which began with just seven students, later expanded into a group offering several professional and higher education courses.
In 1980, he also established a three-star vegetarian hotel named ‘Srinivas’. Over the years, he received several honours, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava District Award in 2004, in recognition of his contributions to education and social service.
He is survived by his wife Vijayalakshmi, daughter Padmini, son Srinivas, and four grandchildren.
