Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): A 46-year-old accused, who was arrested for allegedly hacking to death his live-in-partner recently, was on Sunday found hanging inside the jail here, police said.

Pathanamthitta-native Rajesh, was arrested on December 15 for hacking to death his live-in-partner Sindhu (47) in broad daylight near Vazhayila here, they added.

"Officials found him hanging inside the bathroom of the jail here," a senior police official told PTI.

He was remanded by the court and jailed at Thiruvananthapuram District jail at Poojappura here. An investigation is underway, officials said.

Sindhu was attacked with a sharp weapon and killed by Rajesh while she was standing near a shop, police had said.

Though the woman, who suffered critical injuries on her neck, head and hands, was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital by police, she could not be saved.

Rajesh was living with Sindhu, a native of Vazhayila, for the last 12 years here after leaving his family in Pathanamthitta.

However, clashes broke out between the duo in the course of time and she had shifted to another house recently which was suspected to have led to the crime, a police officer had said.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
