Madurai: A routine update of a family’s e-ration card in Chinnapulampatti village, Peraiyur taluk, Tamil Nadu, took a bizarre turn when the image of a liquor bottle appeared on the card instead of the family member's photo. The incident left the family in a tizzy, but local authorities have assured them that the error will be corrected as soon as possible.
C. Thangavel, a 56-year-old driver, explained that the issue arose while updating the card to remove his recently married daughter's name and add his wife as a beneficiary under the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board scheme. Upon searching for their e-ration card to complete the update, they were taken aback to find the picture of a liquor bottle instead of the cardholder's image.
"We were shocked to see this because the hard copy of the ration card did not have such issues. However, we have informed the local officials about it,” The New Indian Express quoted Thangavel as saying on Wednesday.
Upon investigation, the Civil Supplies Department confirmed that the liquor bottle image had been added to the e-ration card back in 2018.
“It is surprising to know about such issues, and it is a rare one. It is some kind of an error, which wasn’t visible during the processing. However, we will check with the taluk officials; it will be rectified as soon as possible," TNIE quoted Muthu Murugesa Pandi, district supply officer, as saying.
The family has been reassured that the matter will be resolved within the next 24 hours.

Kundapur: Two persons died and several students were injured after a college tour bus rammed into a tanker and a goods lorry parked by the roadside near Maravanthe Beach in Trasi on Wednesday afternoon.
The bus was carrying final-year B.Com students of Rambhapuri College from Shivamogga district. According to sources, the group had left for the tour two days ago.
There were around 50 persons in the bus, including 24 male students and 23 female students.
The students had visited Murdeshwar and were travelling towards Udupi on Wednesday when the accident occurred.
Police said the bus driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, following which the bus first hit a parked gas tanker and then crashed into a goods lorry stationed ahead.
The front portion of the bus was badly mangled in the impact. Preliminary information said the bus cleaner and a cooking assistant travelling with the group died in the accident. Several injured students were shifted to different hospitals in Kundapur for treatment.
