Kalchini (WB) (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday asserted that while BJP governments in his state and Tripura don't allow infiltration from Bangladesh, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee “welcomes” them in Bengal.

Addressing an election rally here in Alipurduar district bordering Assam, Sarma also claimed that the TMC government does not allow fencing on the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal.

“In Assam and Tripura, BJP governments do not allow infiltration from Bangladesh, but (CM) Mamata Banerjee welcomes them in Bengal," he alleged.

Sarma said a demographic change was underway in West Bengal owing to illegal immigration, and claimed that the population of Hindus is declining in the state, while that of Bangladeshi Muslims is increasing.

Elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly will be held in two phases - on April 23 and April 29. Votes will be counted on May 4.

The Assam CM also asserted that the BJP will “surely win” in the northeastern state, and "score a century" in the 126-member assembly when the poll results are out on May 4.
