New Delhi (PTI): A man installing a signboard on a pole was crushed to death after an SUV hit a stationary goods carrier vehicle from behind in northeast Delhi's Shastri Park area in the early hours of Friday, police said.

The incident took place at G T Road near Yudhishthir Setu, Shastri Nagar around 1:50 am, they said.

Sohan, a resident of Shalimar village, was installing a signboard on a pole on a road divider. A speeding Mahindra Thar hit his stationary goods carrier vehicle parked nearby from behind, pushing it onto the road divider and crushing Sohan, who died on the spot, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey.

The Thar driver also suffered injuries in the incident and was taken to a hospital. Both the vehicles were badly damaged and had to be towed away from the spot, he said.

A case under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Shastri Park police station, the DCP said.

He said the Thar driver has not been arrested yet and further investigation in the case is underway.

A senior Public Works Department official refuted reports that the deceased was a PWD employee.

"The deceased was not a PWD employee but was working with a contractor. He was installing a signboard when he was hit," the official said.

Deir al-Balah, Nov 1: Israeli airstrikes on Friday killed at least 24 people in northeastern Lebanon, the country's news agency said, raising the death toll from eight there.

It was the latest deadly toll in the area since the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah escalated last month.

Israel's military has said that its operation in Lebanon is targeting Hezbollah's military infrastructure.

Lebanon's state National news Agency reported four airstrikes in different villages across country's northeast, saying rescuers were still searching for survivors in Younine, a town in the Bekaa Valley, from the rubble of a targeted house.

Hussein Haj Hassan, a Lebanese lawmaker representing the region in Baalbek-Hermel region, said that 60,000 people have already fled their homes in the area due to Israeli bombardment.
