Kolkata: A shocking incident unfolded on Tuesday evening near NRS Medical College and Hospital, where a man accused of stealing a mobile phone was publicly whipped with a belt. The event was witnessed by a large crowd, who remained passive spectators.

A video has emerged showing the accused man desperately trying to shield his face and body from the blows inflicted by another man wielding what appears to be a belt.

The police intervened and took both the alleged thief and the man with the belt to Entally police station. As of late Tuesday, sources indicated that no formal case had been registered.

This incident comes less than a week after another disturbing event in Bowbazar, where 37-year-old Irshad Alam, also suspected of being a mobile phone thief, was allegedly lynched by students and former students inside Udayan Hostel.

On Tuesday, police discovered video footage from the mobile phone of one of the 14 accused students, documenting the brutal assault on Alam that led to his death. Additionally, CCTV footage from a shop opposite the hostel was retrieved. “This footage shows how two former students, employed at the hostel as a cook and a security guard, dragged Alam inside. Although the students attempted to erase this evidence, we managed to recover it from the hard disk,” a police officer stated.
