Bhagalpur, Bihar: An under-construction four-lane bridge over the Ganga River in Bihar's Bhagalpur collapsed on June 4, Sunday for the second time in a year, as captured in a video footage. The bridge, which was inaugurated in 2014 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, connects Sultanganj and Khagaria districts.
The incident took place at approximately 6 pm, and locals managed to record the collapse of the superstructure of the bridge as it fell into the river. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far. The local administration is present at the site, and an inquiry report has been requested from the 'Pul Nirman Nigam', according to a statement from a top district official as quoted by news agency ANI.
In response to the incident, the Chief Minister has ordered an inquiry to investigate the cause of the bridge collapse.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the region. In December of the previous year, a bridge in Begusarai district also collapsed into the Burhi Gandak river. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the bridge had not yet been opened to the public due to the absence of an access road. An official stated that the bridge was scheduled to be inaugurated soon but collapsed prior to the ceremony.
The authorities are expected to take necessary measures to assess the situation and ensure the safety of the residents.
