Mother of two from TN commits suicide on TikTok
New Delhi, June 13: A 24-year old mother of two children committed suicide on Thursday in Tamil Nadu after she was scolded by her husband and prevented from using the short video-making app.
Anitha, recorded herself as she drank the poison and then sent the video via WhatsApp to her husband, who is in Singapore.
According to media reports, Anitha's husband Pazhanivel did not appreciate his wife's TikTok addiction and had asked her to quit the habit.
In her last video, Anitha is seen drinking a dark coloured liquid from a white bottle before breaking into hysterical cough. She died soon after.
The incident has attracted massive criticism online. Some news channels who published the video on YouTube have in fact, disabled comments for the video.
Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, the short video sharing platform claims to have over 120 million monthly active users in India.
This is not the first time TikTok has led to somebody's death.
Earlier in January, a Mumbai-based 15-year old hung herself at her residence on her birthday after her grandmother scolded her for constantly being hooked on TikTok.
Later in April, Salman Zakir, a 19-year-old Delhi resident was accidentally shot by his friend who was trying to make a TikTok video.
Pratik Wadekar (17) died on the spot during the incident which took place in the temple town of Shirdi On June 12 evening.
After such alarming incidences, the Madras High Court passed an interim order banning mobile app citing inappropriate and pornographic content in April.
Deciding the case filed by advocate Muthukumar, the bench vacated its interim order banning the app, subject to conditions that pornographic videos will not be uploaded on it, failing which contempt of court proceedings would begin.
The app was pulled down from both, Google Play Store and Apple's App Store until April 25 a day after the Madras High Court's Madurai Bench lifted the ban.

345 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran return home via Armenia
New Delhi (PTI): A group of 345 Indian fishermen, who were stranded in Iran amid escalating regional tensions, returned to India via Armenia on Saturday, officials said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar thanked his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan for assistance in return of the Indian nationals.
The Indian nationals arrived in Chennai this evening, the officials cited above said.
The circumstances that led to them being stranded in Iran were not immediately known.
"Thank FM @AraratMirzoyan and the Government of Armenia for facilitating the evacuation of Indian fishermen today from Iran, through Armenia to India," Jaishankar said on social media.
Over 1,500 Indian nationals have left Iran through land border crossings in Armenia and Azerbaijan since the start of the West Asia conflict over a month ago.
"A group of Indian fishermen, stranded in Iran, are returning home via Armenia today; their flight is expected to reach India this evening," a government statement said.
It said the Ministry of External Affairs continues to closely monitor the evolving situation in the West Asian region, with the safety, security and welfare of the Indian community being accorded the highest priority.
It also made a mention of five Indians being injured in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
According to Abu Dhabi authorities, the Indian nationals were among the 12 people injured by debris from an intercepted missile.
"In an attack in Abu Dhabi, five Indian nationals were injured; four have been discharged, one remains under treatment," the Indian government's statement said.
It said the Indian mission in Abu Dhabi is extending "full" assistance and coordinating with local authorities, adding that their flight is expected to reach India this evening.
