Bhopal: In a shocking incident, a police constable in Madhya Pradesh reportedly received a salary of approximately Rs 35 lakh over a span of 12 years — without reporting for duty nor undergoing the mandatory training.
According to a report by The New Indian Express, the constable, identified as Abhishek, a native of Vidisha district, was recruited as a constable in the state police in 2011–2012. While other recruits joined duty on time, Abhishek appeared much later at the Bhopal District Lines and was subsequently deputed for training at the Police Training School in Sagar.
However, instead of joining the training program, Abhishek returned to his hometown in Vidisha and remained absent from both training and duty for over a decade. Astonishingly, despite this prolonged absence, he continued to receive his monthly salary for 12 long years — without ever informing the department or applying for leave.
The irregularity came to light only in 2023 during a review of service records for the 10-year time-scale pay grade assessment of the 2011–12 constable batch. “The service record check revealed no rewards, no punishments and no duty records, which was outlandish. He (Abhishek) was summoned by the department’s establishment branch, after which he finally appeared, making it clear he had not served the police even a single day,” TNIE quoted ACP-Bhopal Ankita Khaterkar, who is probing the matter, as saying.
The report further revealed that Abhishek had managed to send his service file via speed post to the department in Bhopal, citing ill health as the reason for his absence. Strikingly, the file was accepted without any verification, enabling him to draw a total salary of around Rs 35 lakh over the years.
Following the revelations, Abhishek has reportedly returned Rs 1 lakh and promised to repaying the remaining amount in installments.
A departmental investigation into the matter is currently underway.
