Mumbai: Mumbai police successfully froze Rs 4.65 crore out of Rs 7.5 crore lost by the owner of a private firm in a cyber fraud case involving SIM swap, officials reported on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Monday in suburban Kandivali when cybercriminals accessed the company's bank account using a SIM swap technique, facilitating multiple unauthorised transactions within minutes. The stolen funds were transferred to various bank accounts.

Upon discovering the fraud, the victim immediately contacted the cybercrime helpline (1930) and provided details via email. Cybercrime branch officials acted promptly, contacting the bank’s nodal officer and reporting the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP).

Within four hours, the cyber police managed to freeze Rs 4.65 crore. However, the remaining amount had already been withdrawn by the perpetrators.

In a SIM swap fraud, scammers deceive mobile network providers into linking a victim's phone number to their own SIM card. This enables them to intercept OTPs and gain unauthorised access to accounts linked to the victim’s mobile number.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to trace the fraudsters and recover the remaining amount.
