New Delhi: The latest All India Survey on Education (AISHE) conducted under the Ministry of Education has revealed that the Muslim community lags behind other communities, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, in terms of higher education enrollment. As per The Hindu's report, the AISHE Survey 2020-21 highlights a decline of 8% in Muslim student enrollment, with approximately 1,79,000 fewer students compared to the previous year.

The survey indicates that while the enrollment of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in higher education improved by 4.2%, 11.9%, and 4%, respectively, the Muslim community witnessed a decline. This decrease is attributed to the relative economic impoverishment of the community, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Muslim students were compelled to work after completing their schooling instead of pursuing higher education.

The steepest decline in Muslim enrollment was reported in Uttar Pradesh (36%), followed by Jammu and Kashmir (26%), Maharashtra (8.5%), and Tamil Nadu (8.1%). Even in Delhi, despite overall improvements in education, every fifth Muslim student failed to enroll for higher education after completing the Senior School Certificate Examination.

Uttar Pradesh, which has seen a significant increase in the number of colleges, recorded a meager 4.5% enrollment of Muslims in higher education, despite Muslims comprising approximately 20% of the state's population. Kerala, on the other hand, stood out as the only state where 43% of Muslims pursued higher education, defying the trend of Muslims lagging behind in education.

The AISHE survey paints a brighter picture for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Scheduled Castes (SC) with 36% and 14% of the total enrollment in higher education, respectively. However, the Muslim community's representation stands at only 4.6% in higher education, despite Muslims accounting for over 14% of the country's overall population.

Faridabad (PTI): A woman allegedly killed her 18-month-old child - her sixth daughter - by throwing her into a drain in Faridabad, claiming she committed the crime as she was unable to take care of her family due to poverty, according to police.

The incident occurred near Dheeraj Nagar on April 23 when the girl's body was found stuck in an iron mesh along a drain by two school children, the police said on Sunday, adding the body was retrieved and sent for a postmortem.

A Crime Branch team, which was probing the case, found CCTV footage showing the girl's mother carrying her in her arms in the area. She then returned alone. The police took the woman into custody, and during questioning, she confessed to throwing the girl into the drain, they said.

The infant died of drowning.

The accused was identified as Neelam, a native of Madhubani in Bihar. She lived in Faridabad with her husband Sanjay, who works in a private firm, the police said.

A senior investigating officer said that during interrogation, the woman said that the deceased was the youngest of her six daughters and that she was driven to commit the crime due to poverty.

"She revealed that her family's financial situation was extremely poor, and with six daughters, she was unable to raise them properly," the officer said.

Police spokesperson Yashpal said they are investigating the matter and the entire picture will be clear soon.
