New Delhi (PTI): The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought an FIR in connection with alleged suicide attempts by students of a private university in Punjab's Mohali after their videos were 'leaked'.

The Commission said it has come across multiple media reports and Twitter posts alleging that videos of girls living in a hostel of Chandigarh University have been leaked and some of them tried to end their lives.

Protests erupted on the campus of the university over "rumors" that some objectionable videos of several women students were recorded. Students also claimed that the administration was trying to cover up the cases of suicides.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday ordered a probe into the matter following the protests that took place past midnight in the Chandigarh University campus located on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road.

Police said a woman student accused in the matter had shared her own video.

In a statement, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Director General of Police, Punjab, to immediately file an FIR against the culprits and to deal with the matter strictly and without any laxity.

The victims must be given proper counseling and their safety and security must be ensured, the NCW said.

The women rights body has also written to Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University, to take stringent action against the culprits in accordance with law and that the university must investigate the matter extensively and in a fair manner.

The Commission has also urged the chairperson, Punjab State Commission for Women, to immediately inquire into the facts of the case and ensure that the police are conducting a fair investigation in the matter without any influence.

Pratapgarh (UP) (PTI): Four people were booked here for the abduction and assault of a man who they allegedly tied to a tree and beat up, police said on Wednesday.

The incident, a video of which has gone viral, took place on Tuesday afternoon under the Kunda police station limits.

The FIR was registered on Wednesday evening based on a complaint from the victim's father.

According to Keshav Prasad Yadav, a resident of Mauli village, some people called his 18-year-old son Nikhil Yadav on the phone and asked him to come out of his house around 2.30 pm on Tuesday.

As he reached outside the village as instructed, the accused allegedly forced him into a car and took him towards the Tinpedwa forest area, where they tied him to a tree and assaulted, the complainant said.

The attackers also recorded a video of the incident and circulated it on social media. The purported video shows the men thrashing Nikhil one after another, while one of them is assumed to have recorded the act.

Kunda Station House Officer Manoj Pandey confirmed the incident and said efforts are underway to identify and arrest all the accused.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has shared the video on social media, describing the incident as reflective of a "dominant mindset" against the PDA (Pichda or Backward, Dalit, and Alpasankhyak or Minority), and demanded strict action against the accused.
