New Delhi: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Saharanpur Police to submit a report on alleged police brutality and inhuman treatment of detainees. The Commission has directed the police to submit a report in four weeks.
The incident pertains to a viral video that was being shared online wherein the cops were brutally beating detainees.
The complainant advocate Maroof Ansari urged NHRC to “investigate the Police excesses” and “recommend strict disciplinary actions against the police officers”.
According to the complaint, on 10 June 2022, a team of police officers from Thana Kotwali Nagar, Saharanpur arrested some protestors who were protesting against the inaction of police against Nupur Sharma, who made derogatory comments against Prophet Mohammad.
“On 11 June 2022, a video was posted on Twitter by Shalabh Mani Tripathi(@shalabhmani), Member of UP Legislative Assembly celebrating the brutal and inhuman treatment by the police with the persons in custody,” reads the complaint.
After the video of police brutality went viral, the BJP leader later deleted the tweet. But its copies were shared and drew massive outrage.
“The concerned authority shall also intimate the Commission, if any, notice, order etc., has been received by him/them in the instant matter from the State Human Rights Commission? If yes, a copy of such order be also sent to the Commission within four weeks,” responded NHRC.
“Let a copy of the complaint be also transmitted to the Secretary of the concerned State Human Rights Commission, calling upon him to inform this Commission the date of cognizance, if any, taken at their end in the instant matter within four weeks.” It added.

Jaipur (PTI): A student preparing for the NEET examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in a rented room in Rajasthan's Sikar on Friday, police said.
According to the police, the student allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using his sister's scarf while one sister was attending coaching classes and the other was in the bathroom.
He had appeared in the NEET UG exam 2026, which was cancelled due to paper leak, they said.
Udyog Nagar SHO Rajesh Kumar said that the deceased, identified as Pradeep Meghwal, was a resident of Kanika ki Dhani village in Jhunjhunu's Gudha Gaudji area.
He had been living in a rented room in Sikar's Jaldhari Nagar area with his two sisters while preparing for NEET over the last three years.
His elder sister later found him hanging and informed the landlord and police after bringing him down, officials said.
The SHO said the body was kept at SK Hospital mortuary, and a postmortem had not been conducted.
The student's father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, told police that Pradeep's NEET examination had gone well and the family was expecting him to score around 650 marks.
Former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot expressed grief over the incident and linked it to anxiety among students after reports of irregularities and paper leaks in NEET 2026.
Pilot said repeated paper leak incidents and cancellation of examinations were affecting students' mental health and demanded a time-bound investigation and strict action against those responsible.
