Surat: No penalty will be imposed for traffic rule violation in Gujarat between October 21 and 27, state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi has said.

The decision has been taken in the backdrop of the Diwali season, the minister said on Friday.

“The citizens can use their hard-earned money to purchase things for the festival,” he said, also asking the citizens, “Do not misuse the government decision to break the law.”

Sanghavi added that the violators would be persuaded not to do so, with the police handing them flowers, reported Scroll.

The government announcement, however, was severely criticized on social media.

Jayant Singh Chaudhary, chief of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, stated that the decision would endanger lives.

“What rubbish is this! Endangering lives of motorists for votes!! Is this why EC delayed polls so such ridiculous #revdi could be scattered?” Chaudhary said in a tweet.

Jignesh Mevani, Congress legislator from Gujarat, posted, “Election can make you do many things!”

The state Assembly elections are expected to be held at the end of the year. The Election Commission announced dates for the Himachal Pradesh polls, but is yet to declare the dates for Gujarat.
