Patna: A social media storm has erupted after claims surfaced that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has registered a 124-year-old woman from Bihar as a first-time voter. The woman, identified as Minita Devi from Siwan district’s Daraundha Assembly Constituency, appears in official voter lists with an EPIC number TSN3400439.

The claim, posted by social media user “Nehr_who” and accompanied by images of the ECI’s voter list, challenges the current Guinness World Records recognition of Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old from the United Kingdom, as the oldest living person. The post sarcastically alleges that the ECI has kept Minita Devi’s case hidden, thereby denying her potential recognition as the world’s oldest person.

Further scrutiny of the same voter lists revealed two other registered voters in Bihar reportedly aged over 119 years, Asha Devi, 120, from Bhagalpur, and Manaturiya Devi, 119, from Gopalganj. These names were added following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls

Social media reactions have ranged from ridicule to serious accusations of electoral malpractice. One widely shared post described the situation as “massive fraud in Bihar SIR” and published a list of EPIC numbers allegedly belonging to voters aged above 115 years. Others mocked the improbability, quipping that “Bihar is truly not for beginners."

Among those amplifying the issue was Mansoor Khan, Congress’s losing candidate from Bengaluru Central in the 2024 election. Mahadevapura Assembly constituency, that Rahul Gandhi used as a sample to substantiate his allegations of voter fraud is a part of the Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha seat. Sharing the Bihar voter list screenshots, he wrote: “Minta Devi, 124 years old. Born when India had a Viceroy, still voting when we have Wi-Fi. Either she’s a time traveller… or our voter list is pure fiction. This is the kind of data in our electoral rolls, @ECISVEEP. #VoteChori #VoteNammaHakku.”

This controversy echoes earlier statements from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has accused the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of facilitating electoral fraud. The Congress party has pointed to the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency, part of the Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha seat, as a key example, stating that a systematic operation using five distinct methods resulted in the deletion of 100,250 names from the voter list in a manner that benefited the incumbent party. Social media users are now citing the Bihar voter list episode as further evidence of what they describe as systemic flaws in the electoral process.

Jaipur (PTI): Five members of a family were burnt alive while the driver was seriously injured after a car caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place near Maujpur on Wednesday night when the victims were returning from a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir.

Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuvanshi said fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control in 15 minutes, but by then the car was completely gutted.

The deceased have been identified as Santosh, his wife Shashi, mother Parvati and daughters Raghani and Sakshi, all residents of Chainpura in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Jindal said a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze. As it was a CNG vehicle, the fire spread fast, leaving the occupants with no time to escape.

"Only skeletal remains were recovered from the vehicle, which have been preserved separately. DNA tests will be conducted to establish their identity," he said.

The car driver, identified as Vinod Kumar Mehar, managed to jump out of the vehicle but sustained around 80 per cent burn injuries. He was initially taken to a nearby health centre and later referred to Jaipur for advanced treatment, officials said.

Further investigation is underway.
