On camera: Woman cop assaulted, hair pulled during protest in Tamil Nadu
Virudhunagar: A woman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Tamil Nadu Police was assaulted by a man on Tuesday when she along with the other police personnel were trying to disperse protesters trying to block a road in Virudhunagar district.
The incident was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media. The video shows an agitator pushing DSP Gayathri and later, another man is seen pulling her hair. Based on the video, the police apprehended Balamurugan, 30, who was seen pulling the DSP’s hair. Additionally, four other people were arrested in connection with the protest.
According to reports, a man, Kalikumar, was allegedly killed by a group of men on Monday due to an old rivalry. In response, his family and friends staged a protest outside a government hospital in Arupukkottai, where Kalikumar’s body was kept, demanding the arrest of his killers. When some of the protesters tried to block the road, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gayathri and other police personnel tried to disperse them.
The situation escalated when some protesters attempted to block the road, prompting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gayathri and other officers to intervene. This intervention led to a physical altercation between the police and the protesters.
In reaction to the incident, Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK leader and Leader of the Opposition said, "Under the DMK regime, anyone can be attacked without any fear of the law. I strongly condemn the DMK government and the puppet chief minister for creating an unsafe environment even for the police, who are supposed to protect the people of the state." He added that appropriate legal action should be taken against those involved in the incident of assaulting DSP Gayathri and insisted on creating a safe environment for everyone in the state, including police officers.

Trump says there will be 'severe consequences' if Putin doesn't agree to stop war after summit
Washington, Aug 13 (AP): US President Donald Trump said Wednesday there will be “very severe consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn't agree to stop the Ukraine war after Friday's summit.
Trump was “very clear” in a virtual meeting Wednesday with European leaders that the US wants to achieve a ceasefire at the upcoming US-Russia summit in Alaska, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
In the same meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, he told the group that Putin “is bluffing” ahead of the planned meeting with Trump.
Putin, Zelenskyy said, “is trying to apply pressure ... on all sectors of the Ukrainian front” in an attempt to show that Russia is “capable of occupying all of Ukraine.”
Putin is also bluffing about sanctions, “as if they do not matter to him and are ineffective. In reality, sanctions are very helpful and are hitting Russia's war economy hard,” Zelenskyy said.
