New Delhi: India’s emphatic Asia Cup 2025 victory over Pakistan has been clouded by political controversy after opposition leaders circulated a video of captain Suryakumar Yadav greeting Pakistan minister Mohsin Naqvi before the tournament.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused Yadav of hypocrisy, alleging that his show of patriotism after the win contradicted his earlier gestures. “At the start of the series, 15 days ago, he shook hands and clicked photos with Pakistan’s minister. Now they are showing the country a drama of patriotism. If nationalism truly flowed in their blood, they should not have stepped onto the field against Pakistan,” Raut wrote on X.

A day earlier, Raut had also questioned the decision to play cricket against Pakistan, citing terrorism and public sentiment. “When citizens do not want connections with Pakistan, why play cricket? Nationalism is missing when money takes over,” he said.

Echoing the criticism, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the team of running “propaganda” at home. Sharing the same video, he claimed players were given a “new script” once opposition to the match surfaced in India.

Despite the political uproar, Team India delivered a clinical performance in the final at Dubai International Stadium. Pakistan, cruising at 113/1 in the 13th over, collapsed to 146 all out, undone by Kuldeep Yadav’s sharp spin that triggered a nine-wicket slide for just 33 runs. India chased down the target of 147 with five wickets to spare, securing their ninth Asia Cup title.

The victory sparked nationwide celebrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team, posting on X: “Operation Sindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same — India wins! Congrats to our cricketers.”
