NAGPUR: A local orthopaedic surgeon was arrested here Sunday night day after an FIR was lodged against him for his communal and hateful tweets.
Dr Satish B Sonar had posted the controversial tweets through his twitter handle @stshsonar which he has now deleted.
He was booked under sections 295(A), 505(2), 294 and 188 of IPC on the FIR lodged by social-political activist and businessman Shehbaz Abrar Siddiqui.
The FIR lodged on May 9 mentions Dr Satish’s April 23 tweet.
“Now since radical, Islamist and anarchist journos and illegitimate citizens are talking about so called Islamophobia and Genocide… so let’s begin it, prove them right. Wipe out the Bastards from the map,” the doctor had allegedly tweeted on April 23.
On May 4, the doctor had made a vulgar comment for in-jail Jamia Millia student Safoora Zargar.
Journalist Fatima Khan of The Print had posted the url link of her article “As arrested and pregnant Jamia student is slandered online, husband keeps faith in judiciary” on her Twitter handle on May 4. Dr Satish Sonar had made the following comment on the story: “Pregnant Student!!? Prostitute!”
The FIR mentions both tweets.
Talking to India Tomorrow, complainant Shehbaz Abrar Siddiqui confirmed he had filed the FIR on Saturday (May 9) and the doctor was arrested from his house Sunday night in Nagpur. He said that the police are producing him in the court today (Monday).
“I was searching for some news on Twitter when I came across a thread where it was said that a doctor in Nagpur had made the controversial tweets. The Twitter user had tagged Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and had sought legal action against the doctor. Then I went to the Twitter profile of the doctor and found that he was continuously involved in posting hate contents,” Shehbaz said.
The Maharashtra Cyber Cell head had ordered filing of the FIR against the person, said Shehbaz Siddiqui, who is also attached to the Maharashtra Congress minority cell.
“I had written to Maharashtra Cyber Cell. The Nagpur Cyber Cell is now investigating the case. Police have acted very fast in this case. They should be applauded. Our Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has vowed zero tolerance for such hatemongering. Whoever tries to disturb communal harmony, from whichever community he is, stringent action should be taken against him,” said Shehbaz.
When asked how this atmosphere of hate be removed, Shehbaz said: “Hate took so many years to grow after Independence. What we are witnessing today was not witnessed by our grandfather and great-grandfather. I am 39 years old. My father tells me that he also never saw such atmosphere when people are avoiding taking vegetables and fruits (from members of a particular community) and even denying treatment to them. When hate took so many years to spread, it will take us many years to clean this atmosphere.”
He further said: “Arrest of one or two such persons is not a big achievement, but this will indeed leave big impact. When the doctor was being arrested, he started crying. He was literally crying for his act. He called me to say he was ashamed of his tweets. But it appears he was a habitual offender.”
