Goalpara(PTI): More than 100 people fell ill after participating in a ritual feast in Assam's Goalpara district, a senior health department official said on Thursday. A prayer meeting was organised in the house of a member of the Garo community in Mariampur village bordering Meghalaya on Wednesday followed by a feast, Joint Director (Health) Paresh Kalita told reporters.

Many people reported sick since Wednesday and more than 100 people have been admitted to Goalpara Civil Hospital and other hospitals in the district. Kalita said they suspect food poisoning caused by fish as only people who ate fish fell ill while those who ate vegetarian food are fine.

He said that most of the patients are out of danger and their condition was stated to be stable.

Hathras (UP) (PTI): The blood-soaked body of an elderly man was found inside his house in Paharpur village here on Tuesday morning, police said.

The deceased, Jagdish Prasad Sharma, 75, who lived alone, had gone to sleep in his house on Monday night, officials said.

On Tuesday morning, his blood-soaked body was lying on a cot, with marks on his head and body indicating blows from a sharp-edged weapon, they said, adding that the police suspect murder.

Police and forensic teams reached the spot upon receiving information and sent the body for a post-mortem, they said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ramanand Kushwaha said that Sharma, a retired Health Department employee, had been living alone since his wife's death during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He owned around 20-25 bighas of land and was also engaged in money lending, the officer said.
