Mangaluru: Finding three senior police officers guilty of having registered a POCSO case against innocent persons, the District Additional and POCSO Special Court ordered that they pay the victims a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

The court has said it was dereliction of duty on the part of Circle Inspector Lokesh AC and Sub-inspectors Shrikala and Pushparani to register cases against innocent persons – manual workers Chandrappa and Prasad – without any substantial evidence, thereby providing protection to the guilty. The police officers failed to duly investigate the POCSO case by questioning the witnesses and checking the available documents and proofs. They have also submitted before the court false information and fake documents regarding the case, all of which are acts of dereliction, the bench added.

The three officers have been instructed to pay Chandrappa, who has been declared innocent, Rs 4 lakh and Prasad Rs 1 lakh within 40 days. The fine will have to be paid in court, said Justice KM Radhakrishna, who heard the case.

The court has sent the details of the POCSO case, including judgment, to the chief secretary of the state government and the Mangaluru city police commissioner and asked them to take legal action against the defaulting police officials.

Mumbai (PTI): The Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Raut, the brother of party leader Sanjay Raut, for allegedly making offensive remarks against rival Shiv Sena leader Suvarna Karanje, an official said.

Sunil Raut and Karanje are pitted against each other in Mumbai's Vikhroli assembly seat.

The Sena (UBT) candidate allegedly made the comments at an event in Tagore Nagar area of suburban Vikhroli on October 27 and a video of it later went viral on social media.

Following a complaint by Karanje, the police on Monday registered a case against Sunil Raut under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, including 79 (insult to modesty of woman), the official said.

The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled on November 20 and votes will be counted on November 23.
