New Delhi: Raising his voice against the BJP led Central government’s citizenship bill, prominent Manipuri filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma on Sunday said that he would like to return his Padma-Shri award that he received in 2016.

Ever since the central government proposed the citizenship bill, protest have gripped the north-eastern region of the country. The bill which was proposed by the BJP government, will grant citizenship to the non-Muslims from neighboring Muslim majority countries i.e. Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The bill which has already been passed in the Lok Sabha, has been termed as an attempt of BJP to boost the Hindu vote bank and blatantly anti-Muslim by the political experts.

The bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha in the next session where unlike Lok Sabha, BJP doesn’t have majority. The bill is also expected to face resistance from the Congress party in the upper house.
