PTI Fact Check: False claim on Arvind Kejriwal’s health circulates after AAP's Delhi poll debacle

New Delhi (PTI Fact Check): Just days after the BJP won the Delhi Assembly polls, an alleged screenshot of a news report went viral on social media, which quoted AAP MP Sanjay Singh stating that party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal may slip into coma. However, an investigation by PTI Fact Check Desk found that the alleged statement was made by Singh in July 2024, when Kejriwal was lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. A screenshot of the news report from back then was shared on social media with a false claim.

The counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly polls – held on February 5 – was taken up on February 8. The BJP registered a landslide victory, bagging 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly, marking its return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party won the remaining 22 seats, whereas the Congress once again failed to open its account.

Claim

An Instagram user shared on February 9 a screenshot of an alleged news report by News 24, which quoted AAP MP Sanjay Singh saying that party convenor Arvind Kejriwal could slip into coma.

The text in the screenshot from the news report, originally in Hindi, read: “Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal can go into coma: Sanjay Singh”

Investigation

The Desk conducted a Reverse Image Search on the photo and found that several other users shared the same screenshot with similar claims on social media. Two such posts can be viewed here and here, and their archived versions can be found here and here, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Desk noticed that the alleged statement by Singh referred to Kejriwal as ‘Chief Minister’, the post from which he had resigned in September 2024. After him stepping down, Atishi took charge as Delhi CM while Kejriwal remained lodged in jail.

Taking a cue from this, the Desk conducted a customised keyword search on Google to find relevant news reports, and came across a report by India Today, dated July 15, 2024, whose headline read: “Arvind Kejriwal may slip into coma, says AAP, shreds Tihar Jail report”.

“A team of AIIMS doctors has been examining Arvind Kejriwal's health, and they have found out that Kejriwal is losing weight fast and is suffering from hypoglycemia. His blood sugar level dropped below 50 mg/dL five times, which could have caused him to slip into a coma or even resulted in his death, Sanjay Singh claimed,” read a section of the report.

On further scanning the search results, the Desk also found the original X (formerly Twitter) post of News 24, which was uploaded on July 15, 2024.

Subsequently, the Desk concluded that an old and unrelated statement by Sanjay Singh was shared on social media as recent with a false claim.

CLAIM

The news report quoted Sanjay Singh making the claim way back in July 2024, and has no relation to the recent Assembly polls in Delhi.

CONCLUSION

Multiple social media users shared a screenshot of a news report quoting AAP MP Sanjay claiming that Arvind Kejriwal may slip into coma. In investigation, the Desk concluded that the news report dated back to July 2024 when the then Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with the excise policy case. The old and unrelated statement was shared on social media as recent with a false claim.

Murder case accused dies in police custody due to 'illness'

Bengaluru (PTI): A 45-year-old murder case accused allegedly died due to illness while in police custody, police said on Thursday.

The deceased was arrested by the Mahalakshmi Layout police on April 28 in connection with a conspiracy to rob money and gold ornaments from a woman living alone by causing a fatal accident.

“In this case, one accused was arrested and produced before the court for further investigation, and police custody was obtained. On May 2, at around 2:00 a.m., the accused complained of stomach pain. He was immediately admitted as an inpatient atVictoria Hospital.

On May 5, at around 9:20 a.m., the doctors at Victoria Hospital informed that the accused had died after failing to respond to treatment,” police said in a release.

The accused had a history of long-term illness, it said. “While he was in police custody, he became unwell due to stomach pain and was admitted to Victoria Hospital for treatment. He died after failing to respond to treatment.”

According to police, against this person, three cases were registered at Seshadripuram Police Station, one at Mahalakshmi Layout Police Station, one at High Grounds Police Station, and one at Rajagopal Nagar Police Station.

Earlier, a rowdy sheet had been opened against him at Seshadripuram Police Station.
