Puducherry: According to The News Minute report when the Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi was in Puducherry attending a public meeting with fisherfolk on Wednesday, Puducherry’s Chief Minister Narayanasamy volunteered to be his live interpreter. Ironically, when a woman approached Rahul Gandhi and complained about the CM himself, Narayanasamy resorted to distorting the message via mistranslation.
In the video that went viral, a woman in a green sari is seen addressing Rahul Gandhi talking about the state of the coastal region in Tamil. “The coastal areas have always been like this. No one is giving us support. Even this person (Narayanasamy) didn’t come to visit us during the cyclone, did he?” she said, to loud cheers.
To the chagrin of netizens, Narayanasamy translated the opposite of the woman’s message to Rahul Gandhi and mistranslated it as, “During Cyclone Nivar, I came and visited the area and gave relief to them, so she is saying that,” he lied, even as the complete event was being streamed live on his Facebook page.
Following the awkward episode, the CM’s mistranslating video went viral, with many people poking fun at the incident.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Puducherry marks the beginning of the campaign for the Congress party in the Union Territory, which is expected to give a boost to the current party-led government. The Puducherry government had faced turmoil with the recent resignation of four MLAs, which had also resulted in them losing their majority in the UT Assembly.
In the midst of this, the NR Congress, which is the Opposition party in Puducherry, is demanding for the Puducherry government to prove its majority while Chief Minister Narayanasamy continues to assert that the party has a majority in the Union Territory.
Currently, in a 28-member Puducherry Assembly following the resignation of MLAs, the ruling Congress has 10 MLAs, while the DMK has three MLAs and one independent candidate.

New Delhi (PTI): India on Tuesday described the wounding of three Indians in an attack on the United Arab Emirates' port city of Fujairah as "unacceptable" and pressed for an immediate cessation of hostilities targeting innocent civilians.
New Delhi's reaction came a day after the Indians were injured after a drone attack caused a fire at a major oil industry zone in Fujairah. The UAE had accused Iran of carrying out the strike.
"The attack on Fujairah that resulted in injury to three Indian nationals is unacceptable," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
"We call for immediate cessation of these hostilities and the targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians," the spokesperson said.
Jaiswal said India continued to stand for dialogue and diplomacy to deal with the situation so that peace and stability could be restored across West Asia.
"We also call for free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz in keeping with international law. India stands ready to support all efforts for a peaceful resolution of issues," he said.
The attack on Fujairah city came as the ceasefire between the US and Iran came under strain in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and gas pass, remains a major sticking point in the talks. Shipping through the narrow Gulf waterway has been severely disrupted by the conflict, triggering a sharp increase in oil prices and energy shortages in several countries.
The UAE's defence ministry on Monday said its air defence systems engaged 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and four drones launched from Iran.
The ministry affirmed that it "remains fully prepared and ready to deal with any threats and will firmly confront anything that aims to undermine the security of the country."
