Jalandhar: In a deeply troubling incident, the decomposed body of a 26-year-old man was found inside a room at Shahkot police station in Punjab’s Jalandhar district, two days after he was reported missing.

The deceased, identified as Gurbhej Singh, alias Bheja, was a resident of Bajwa Kalan village. Singh had been assisting staff at the police station for the past few months by serving tea and water. The officials, who claimed they were clueless about his whereabouts for two days, have now initiated an investigation to rule out any foul play, as reported by The Indian Express on Tuesday.

His family, although they did not file a formal missing person’s complaint, had informed Shahkot police of his absence. Shockingly, it wasn’t until late Sunday night—over 48 hours later—that his body was found inside a rarely accessed room on the terrace of the police station, after a foul smell raised alarm.

“Preliminary findings suggest the possibility of a poisonous insect bite or a similar cause. The exact cause of death will be determined by the post-mortem report,” TIE quoted Police Inspector Balwinder Singh Bhullar, Station House Officer, Shahkot police station, as saying.

Singh, a former kabaddi player and bodybuilder, was cremated on Monday evening after his body was handed over to his family following the post-mortem conducted at the Government Hospital in Nakodar.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
