Jaipur: Rajasthan is witnessing a disturbing surge in crimes against minors and young girls, with state police headquarters data revealing that over 200 cases of gang rape were registered between January and June 2025.

The data, cited by The New Indian Express on Monday, further revealed that five girls were murdered after being raped during this period, while over 600 cases of sexual harassment were reported, underscoring a growing threat to women’s safety across the state.

In total, 19,600 criminal cases involving various atrocities against women were registered in Rajasthan until June this year. Police filed charge sheets in 5,359 cases, while 4,790 cases resulted in First Information Reports (FIRs), of which 4,613 were later closed as false. Investigations could not be carried out in 9,451 cases.

Families are increasingly alarmed, with many parents expressing reluctance to send their daughters to school or college. Incidents of dowry harassment further highlight the insecurity women face, even within the confines of their own homes.

The disclosure of these figures has sparked a political storm in Rajasthan, with former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot taking to X to question the current government, urging, “What is happening, Chief Minister? Please pay attention.”

Tensions intensified on Raksha Bandhan when a woman in Ajmer was allegedly murdered by her husband, a BJP leader, added the report. Gehlot voiced deep concern over the incident, accusing the government of failing to uphold law and order in the state.

In response, BJP Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot condemned the politicisation of crimes against women, calling it “very unfortunate” to use such incidents as a political tool. He asserted that criminal cases had declined by 10% under the Bhajanlal government, reflecting its commitment to women’s safety compared to the previous administration. “It is regrettable that Congress leaders are politicising a woman’s death,” he added.
