Dantanpur: Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly’s car was involved in a minor road accident on Thursday near Dantanpur on the Durgapur Expressway. The incident occurred while Ganguly was en route to Bardhaman for a university event.
Reports indicate that the mishap happened when a lorry abruptly braked in front of Ganguly’s convoy. His Range Rover, which was moving at a normal speed, lost control when the lorry suddenly cut into the convoy. In an attempt to avoid a collision, Ganguly’s driver applied the brakes, leading to a minor chain reaction that caused the car behind his vehicle to bump into it.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the vehicles were not traveling at high speed. Two cars in the convoy sustained minor damage. Ganguly’s journey was briefly halted for about 10 minutes before he resumed his travel.
Despite the incident, Ganguly attended the scheduled program at Bardhaman University and later participated in an event organized by the Bardhaman Sports Association. Speaking at the event, Ganguly expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am overwhelmed. It feels great to be in Burdwan. BDS (Burdwan Sports Association) has been inviting me for a long time, and I am glad to be here today. CAB has worked with the Burdwan sports organization for 50 years, and many players have emerged from this district. We need to continue recruiting players from here in the future as well.”

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has observed that the time has come to decriminalise the defamation law, while agreeing to examine a plea by the Foundation for Independent Journalism seeking to quash the summons issued to it in a criminal defamation case.
A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Amita Singh.
The apex court passed the remark while hearing the plea of the organisation, which runs The Wire news portal, and its political affairs editor Ajoy Ashirwad Mahaprashasta.
"I think time has come to decriminalise all this..." Justice Sundresh observed orally.
The top court was hearing a plea challenging a trial court order issuing summons to them in a defamation case filed by the former JNU professor over the publication of the dossier.
The complainant had argued before the lower court that the accused people had launched a hate campaign against her to malign her reputation.
This is the second round of litigation on the alleged defamatory report published by the portal.
The Delhi High Court in 2023 had quashed the summons issued to them. The top court, however, reversed the order and remanded the matter for fresh consideration before the trial court.
The trial court again issued a summons, and the high court also upheld it.
