Guwahati: On Friday night, students at the National Institute of Technology at Silchar in Cachar district of Assam, clashed with the police during a massive student protest against NIT authorities. The college has been introducing new guidelines for students everyday. The student added, “The students are not happy with the behaviour of the administration of NIT Silchar. Today, one of the students died by suicide due to depression.”
According to the students, they were protesting peacefully, and wanted to meet the Director of the institute, but were met with police batons instead
Another protesting student said, “Our student, our senior, died by suicide, and we were doing peaceful agitation but the authorities of NIT Silchar didn't even bother to come and talk to us. They unleashed police on us, police lathi-charged us."
According to the college administration, the student allegedly killed himself due to depression, they said, the student had problems since his first year itself and he might have been depressed as he couldn't clear backlogs.
The police said they had to take steps to de-escalate the situation as the students were not ready to negotiate, they also vandalised cars and ransacked the residence of the Dean. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and the police have recovered the dead body and sent it for post-mortem.

New Delhi (PTI): Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the nuclear energy bill with Union minister Jitendra Singh asserting that it would help India achieve its target of 100 GW atomic energy generation by 2047.
The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill, which seeks to open the tightly-controlled civil nuclear sector for private participation, was passed by voice vote amid a walkout by the opposition.
Singh termed the bill a "milestone legislation" that will give a new direction to the country's developmental journey.
"India's role in geopolitics is increasing. If we have to be a global player, we have to follow global benchmarks and global strategies. The world is moving towards clean energy. We too have set a target of 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047," he said.
The opposition contended that the bill diluted provisions of the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 that passed on the liability for a nuclear incident on to the suppliers of nuclear equipment.
