Sultanpur (UP): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accused of making a defamatory remark against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Bengaluru in 2018, was granted bail by the District Civil Court on Tuesday, after the hearing of a case booked against the Congress leader based on a complaint filed by Vijay Mishra.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, advocate Santosh Pandey, who appeared for the complainant, confirmed the news, adding that the court took Rahul Gandhi into custody for about half an hour after he surrendered in court. "Rahul Gandhi's bail application was submitted and accepted by the court. The further date for hearing of the case is yet to be given. His lawyer has said that Rahul Gandhi is innocent and has not made any defamatory statement," Pandey said.

A complaint had been filed against Rahul Gandhi by BJP District Vice-president Vijay Mishra on August 4, 2018. The complainant, citing the Congress leader's remark at a press meet held in Bengaluru in 2018 that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was led by a president who was an accused in a murder case, had pointed out that Amit Shah was the then BJP President. Four years prior to Rahul Gandhi's statement, however, a special CBI court in Mumbai had cleared Shah of the charges in a 2005 fake encounter case.
