Bengaluru: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s word of thanks on social media to birthday wishes from Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge is being greatly appreciated by pro-Kannada people.

“This is a lesson to Kannadigas on their mother tongue!” some have tweeted, lauding Stalin’s efforts against imposition of Hindi.

Kharge wished Stalin on his 70th birthday on social media, tweeting, “Warm birthday greetings to Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and President of DMK, Thiru M K Stalin ji. Wishing you good health and a long life.”

In response, Stalin thanked Kharge for the wishes, referring to Kharge with the term ‘avare’, the Kannada term of respect, saying, “Thank you @kharge avare for your warm wishes.”

His reply is considered by many netizens as a veiled reprimand for the use of ‘Ji’, the Hindi term of respect, by Kharge, who is a Kannadiga.

The Tamil Nadu chief minister is being showered with messages of appreciation for his ‘Kannada style of response’; his reply is also going viral on social media.

Pro-Kannada activist Arun Javgal has posted, “He (Stalin) has given Kannadigas a lesson on their nativity.”

A netizen has said, “#stopHindiImposition is in every drop of Stalin’s blood.”

A third Twitter user has wished Stalin, adding a word of appreciation, “Happy Birthday Stalin avare, may the politicians of our land be inspired by you.”

Another social media user Harish has posted, “Thank you, Stalin avare. Our politicians, who are suffering from the ‘ji disease’, should recover by learning from such people.”
