As Andhra Pradesh and its BJP wing geared up for PM Narendra Modi’s visit to state’s Guntur, to officially launch election campaign on Sunday, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers launched protests against the prime minister, by waiting with black flags and balloons, for the Prime Minister to arrive.
Leading from the front, their leader and Andhra Pradesh CM Chandra Babu Naidu, binned the protocol and did not show up to receive PM even as Governor ESL Narasimhan arrived at Gannavaram to receive Modi.
Earlier yesterday, Naidu had told party workers “It’s a black day for Andhra people. If he (Narendra Modi) sets his foot in our home state, our soils will become unholy as he is a betrayer, belying his own assurances given to our bifurcated state such as special category status,” in a teleconference.
‘Modi Go Back’ banners were also seen, as people waited on the roads with black balloons and black t-shirts, for the PM to arrive. The protesters also carried empty pots indicating that the PM’s promises are empty.
Joining the protest, Congress state president, N. Raghuveera Reddy described the Modi’s visit as black day for Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu’s TDP was once an ally of NDA government led BJP, but pulled out of the alliance after the BJP government in centre failed to give special status to Andhra Pradesh.
