Miami: Tesla turned down a $60 million settlement offer in a lawsuit over a deadly 2019 crash involving a Model S equipped with Autopilot, but a jury awarded $243 million in damages earlier this month.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs revealed the settlement proposal in a filing on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida as part of a motion seeking legal fees from the company. According to a report by The Hindu, they argued that Florida law entitles them to fees accrued since May 30, when Tesla turned down the offer.
The case was registered on an April 2019 after an accident in which a Tesla Model S using Autopilot collided with a parked Chevrolet Tahoe on a highway shoulder. The crash killed Naibel Benavides Leon and severely injured her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo.
Jurors found Tesla liable for $42.6 million of the compensation amount and punitive damages and they awarded $129 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive penalties. The Tesla driver was judged 67% liable but was not identified as a defendant.
Tesla vowed to appeal and rejected the accusations and stated that the decision undercuts efforts to develop autonomous driving technologies.
