New Delhi: The Hindu has clarified that a purported front page of the newspaper dated June 6, 1967, carrying the headline “Don’t buy gold, Indira tells people; appeals for ‘national discipline’” is digitally altered and does not belong to its archives.

The fabricated image began circulating widely on social media after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reduce dependence on imported goods, including encouraging the public to prefer Indian products over foreign alternatives. In the days following his remarks, supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party shared the image to argue that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had made a similar appeal during an earlier economic crisis.

Several users circulated the image to suggest that criticism directed at Modi’s call was politically selective, claiming that Indira Gandhi had once asked Indians not to buy gold in order to conserve foreign exchange.

However, The Hindu issued a statement on its official X account dismissing the image as fake.

“A digitally altered image purporting to be a front page of The Hindu from June 6, 1967, is currently circulating on social media. We wish to clarify that this is not an authentic page from our archives. The Hindu urges readers to exercise caution and verify before sharing,” the newspaper said.

The image featured a photograph of Indira Gandhi and claimed that the government had appealed to citizens to stop buying gold to help preserve the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The layout and headline were designed to resemble a genuine front page of the newspaper.
