Ahmedabad: Gujarat BJP MLA CK Raulji, has defended the 11 convicts of Bilkis Bano gang-rape convicts who were released earlier this week. Raulji was on the panel that recommended release.
In a video interview for the “Mojo Story,” Raulji said the convicts were Brahmins, men of good ‘Sanskar’.
Earlier, this week, the Gujarat government prematurely released 11 convicts from the Godhra sub-jail who were facing life sentence for gang-raping Bilkis Bano and killing her three-year-old daughter.
After their release, they were felicitated at the auditorium of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Trust, named after the first president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which is also in government in Gujarat. According to the employees of the trust, the event had been organised by Arvind Sisodia, an RSS member, who is seen in pictures garlanding the convicts.
“They are Brahmins, Men of Good Sanskaar. Their conduct in jail was good", Raulji said during the interview.
Twitter users expressed their anguish over the BJP legislator’s statement and called out the saffron party and its members for supporting the rape convicts.
