Chandigarh: A travel agent from Indore has been arrested for allegedly defrauding a Barwala resident of ₹20 lakh by falsely promising him entry into the United States. The accused, Lokesh Jat, was nabbed in Noida on May 16 by the anti-immigration fraud unit of Panchkula police.

The complainant, Dilraj Singh, had filed a report on September 30 last year, about the elaborate scam which began on October 13, 2023. Jat had assured Singh of facilitating his entry into the US, but instead sent him on a difficult journey through countries like Thailand, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Russia, and Dubai, over several months. Despite repeated assurances, Singh was never able to reach the US and was ultimately brought back to India.

When confronted, Jat allegedly offered Singh a Canadian visa as an alternative route to the US but again failed to deliver or refund the money. During a seven-day police remand, authorities managed to recover ₹5 lakh of the defrauded amount. Jat, now in judicial custody, is one of four individuals accused in the case.
Police are searching for the remaining three accused and trying to recover the remaining funds.
