Dehradun/Agartala: A young tribal student from Tripura, Anjel Chakma, died after being stabbed in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district following an alleged racially motivated attack earlier this month. The incident occurred on December 9 in the Selakui area of Dehradun.

According to available information, Anjel and his brother were allegedly abused with racial slurs by a group of youths. When the brothers objected to the remarks, the group attacked them. During the confrontation, Anjel reportedly told the assailants that they were Indians and not Chinese, which is said to have further provoked the attackers.

Anjel sustained serious injuries to his neck and abdomen and was admitted to a hospital, where he remained under treatment for several weeks. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

The incident has triggered strong reactions from the victim’s family and several student and tribal organisations, who have demanded strict punishment for those responsible. Uttarakhand Police have said that most of the accused have been arrested and that one suspect remains at large.

Reacting to the incident, Sajra Debbarma, President of the Tipra Indigenous Students Federation, said the attack on Anjel Chakma should not be viewed as an isolated case. He said people from the Northeast continue to face racial abuse and violence in different parts of the country and called for stronger action to prevent such incidents.

Police said further investigation is underway and efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused.
